Lighters urged to celebrate equinox by ‘drawing with light’

Next month (March) will see the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) encourage lighters, designers, artists and the general public to ‘draw with light’ as part of its annual ‘Chase the Dark’ event.

Chase the Dark has been running for 12 years and is a global celebration of creativity and light, inviting lighting designers, artists, and enthusiasts to come together for what IALD has described as “a playful, inspiring, and uplifting experience”.

This year’s theme, ‘Drawing with Light’, will encourages participants to explore how light can be a creative medium through photography, projections, refraction, sculpture, or other imaginative expressions.

The celebration will start on 20 March (the Vernal Equinox) with the aim being to follow the rising sun as it ‘chases’ the darkness westward from one side of the International Date Line to the other.

The event will then continue through to 10 April, so that everyone can make plans and take part on a day and time that’s ideal for them, the IALD said.

Events can be held at locations of any size and environment, it has emphasised: showrooms, studios, classrooms, offices, or even a park. IALD regions and chapters will also host in-person social gatherings worldwide.

The IALD has an online global calendar that people can use to find an open event near them.

People will also be encouraged to share their creations on social media (Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn and so forth) using the hashtags #IALDChaseTheDark and #DrawingWithLight.
