LIFTING UP RETAIL

Michael Grubb’s Lift 109 lighting scheme within Battersea Power Station has now been complemented with a new scheme designed to link the retail space to the lift’s dynamic audio-visual experience

Last May, along with unpicking Speirs Major’s lighting masterplan for Battersea Power Station, Lighting Journal examined the lighting scheme for its Lift 109 (‘Power living’, May 2023, vol 88 no 5).

This offers a dynamic audio-visual experience, combined with breath-taking 360-degree views of the London skyline from 109m above the ground.

The ethereal lighting scheme for this element of the site was provided and delivered by Michael Grubb Studio – and a further element has now been added to its accompanying retail space.

Rings and circles of light are used to echo the form of the power station chimneys, one of London’s most iconic landmarks of course. These circular forms also mirror the dynamic animated lit experience as visitors ascend the chimney in the glass lift.

The lighting is also used to help visually link the retail space to the rest of the Lift 109 exhibition. A custom RGBW pendant, created specifically for the retail space, visually connects to the chandelier in the main Lift 109 exhibition. It also catches attention and draws visitors into the space.

As many of the retail displays and units are temporary and mobile, it was vital the scheme can be adjusted and adapted in accordance with differing retail offerings and layouts.  Track-mounted spotlights and integrated linear LEDs create a layered, versatile lit effect to highlight items on display.

Rachael Flint, associate at Michael Grubb Studio, said: ‘The lighting design plays a dual role; acting commercially with regard to encouraging browsers to become buyers, while ensuring visitors know they are still within the Lift 109 experience through the atmosphere and the visual cues.
‘Overall, the result makes for an unforgettable experience, and the team are incredibly proud to have worked on this world-famous, awe-inspiring project,’ Rachel added.
