The ILP has joined forces with the STEM Learning platform to promote STEM careers within schools, colleges and youth organisations, as part of its continuing drive to encourage more young people to join the profession.
The link-up means the ILP has become a formally registered organisation within STEM Learning, which is the national organisation that runs the STEM Ambassador programme.
The partnership will enable the ILP to develop a clearer picture of the impact lighting professionals are having across the UK in terms of promoting and encouraging STEM careers.
Business manager at Southwark Council and Past President Perry Hazell, who is leading the ILP’s Pathways into Lighting programme, said: “This is all about bringing together the great individual work so many members already do in this area, as well as encouraging more members to become STEM ambassadors.
“Once we have 10 or more active ambassadors linked to the ILP, STEM Learning can put a data-sharing agreement in place which gives us access to a dashboard showing activity, volunteering hours and so on.
“That means in future we can demonstrate the impact the lighting industry is having, rather than just knowing lots of good STEM work is happening independently.
“So for example, if you arrange a visit to your local school, deliver a careers talk and then record that activity through your STEM Ambassador account, we can through this partnership now capture that data collectively,” Perry added.
Becoming a STEM Ambassador is free. You can register online, complete an induction and STEM Learning will then arrange an enhanced DBS check at no cost.
