ILP members are being urged to contribute best-practice case studies to sit alongside the newly updated Part D of the Well-Managed Highway Infrastructure Code of Practice when it is fully published this autumn.
David Denner, chair of the UK Lighting and Technology Board, made the call to ILP members at the Lighting Live Annual Conference in Birmingham last month.
The board is part of the UK Roads Leadership Group (UKRLG), formerly the UK Road Liaison Group.
A provisional version of the updated Code of Practice was published in May, followed by a consultation that ran until early June. That consultation generated some 75 comments, which will now be fed back to the board.
The aim from here is that the final document will be reviewed and signed off by the board early in the autumn. The intention is for it then to be presented and discussed at Highways UK, which is being held at the NEC in Birmingham in October.
This will be followed over the next six months by a series of roadshows and regional workshops to bring different parts of the document directly to interested local authorities.
“It is all about helping each other, which is one of the nicest parts of being part of the professional lighting community,” David said to ILP members gathered in Birmingham.
The new Part D is intended to be a much more ‘dynamic’ document than its predecessor, which dates back to 2016, he added.
“We wanted it to be a searchable digital platform that we could bolt into AI for searches; we wanted an over-arching update to the governance, the legal side,” David said.
It will also be accompanied by a series of digital ‘quick guides’ designed to cover a range of different asset types.
“Have you got something that is unique? Maybe you are, say, a coastal authority and have a case study around some really nice decorative columns. Or maybe you’re a rural authority and have had some challenges?” said David, who is also highways technology manager at Welsh Government.
“Or maybe you’ve joined together with some other local authorities or will be managing changes of boundaries under local government reorganisation in England? What are you doing around best practice in terms of your contractors? How are you working with schools and colleges?
“I am sure you are all doing a great job but are there things you are doing that could help others? We can see how important it is to share best practice, to share the knowledge,” David added.
The board is looking to gather in examples of case studies over the summer, and the project team can be contacted at ukrlgcodeofpractice@atkinsrealis.com
